Joy Wah seems to elicit extreme responses from Yelpers. And we find ourselves somewhere in the middle. Of course, finding a Chinese restaurant in Bellows Falls recalls Samuel Johnson's observation about "a dog walking on his hinder legs; it is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all." But it is Bellows Falls and it is a decent if unremarkable Chinese restaurant. The food is not too greasy though a bit under-spiced for us, it has generally tasty ingredients, though some sauces are gummy and ... well, not always pleasant tasting. The restaurant has a pleasant if a tad gaudy atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable, servings very large, the servers sometimes friendly, occasionally distant. We are fond of the Hot and Sour Soup, the Tangerine Chicken and Scallops, the Ho Yu Gai Poo (chicken cooked in a thin almost buttery batter) and Bruccoli Chicken. There is a buffet on Sundays, and take out is always available. Joy Wah is hardly be the last word in Chinese cuisine -- we'd definitely suggest sampling one of our favorite area restaurants, Panda North, in Brattleboro if you have the time. It's better in almost every way.

Absolutley outstanding food. I'm a huge fan of Chinese food and usually small towns don't have much variety when it comes to choosing a decent restaurant. Fortunately joy Wah offers very good quality food at a reasonable price. I've had most of the dishes they have to offer and have yet to be disappointed. On top of there delicious entrees and appetizers there service is wonderful. They serve their food promptly and are very friendly and accommodating. If you're looking for good food with large portions and a price that won't break your bank, look no further this is the place for you!

Good Chinese Food, and you wont get that salty taste after meal. The ambiance is classy, and upscale like.

The Joy Wah is a great Chinese restaurant that is run by truly wonderful people, Let start off with their egg rolls- the best I have ever had! Joy Wah has an extensive menu all prepared as if you were in Chinatown! The atmosphere and view are also gems of this local establishment. Great service, great food, and a great atmosphere this is definitely one of the best places around.

Anyone who has written a positive review on here hasn't dealt with the WRATH of the little owner woman --- I had the worst possible experience at a restaurant in my LIFE. I've been going here for a year and now I'd never recommend them. It started with ordering the wrong thing --- I don't eat meat, so I asked for a spring roll --- it had pork and shrimp. Calmly, I did explain it to the woman but she just quickly barked that that's how it was. I told her, no --- I don't want this. And she said, (pointing at the roll I had cut open) I can't RE-SELL THIS. WHAT? RE-SELL FOOD THAT COMES BACK TO THE KITCHEN? Straight out of her mouth. Long story short, she yelled at my mom and I and my mom paid for our drinks and her soup and left. The owner didn't care about us, didn't care about the experience and certainly doesn't care about following HEALTH DEPARTMENT GUIDELINES. This place should NOT be open. And believe me, we will be contacting the health department on them.

Best Chinese restaurant In the USA. Mr & Mrs Hom are wonderful people, and their food is free of MSG!

I've tried this place several times over the past ten years or so. I've had a terrible meal each time. Very greasy, bad-tasting food (the grease soaks through the takeout boxes within minutes). Their New Year's Eve buffet was particularly disappointing considering its huge variety of options. For some reason, a lot of people still swear by it, but I would rather go to any other restaurant in the area. I've had some of the best and worst American Chinese food, and Joy Wah sits at the bottom. I'd honestly rather go to the Chinese restaurant next to the bridge in downtown Bellows Falls, and that's saying something.

Read the reviews before going in. Had an excellent meal anyways!! Btw we're on our way from NYC to Quebec tonight!

For Bellows Falls, VT it's OK. Have been there a number of times for Sunday buffet it's fine. On one occasion my son & I stopped in for dinner. I recall ordering a spicy beef dish extra hot. when the dish arrived I was quite disappointed - tabasco not chillies for the heat - oh well. In some respects I'm probably a snob as far as Chinese food is concerned. I eat Chinese food sometimes two to three times a week in NYC's Chinatown.

Went out on a drive with my wife in Feb. 0n our anniversary weekend, we were hungry for a late lunch stopped in by chance and had a wonderful experience. We sat in the sun room and we could see a nice view of the river below us as well as mountain and valley views. The food was great, crab rangoon yum !! Service could have been a little faster ( I think only because I was so hungry). Taking my whole family there today (all 6 of us) as part of our road trip. My wife is out numbered 5 to 1, always wished we had a daughter. 4 son's what a blessing.

My family has been getting take out from the Joy Wah for a long time. It is standard sweet, greasy, saucy Americanized Chinese food (which is sometimes exactly what you want, and is comfort food.) The general tsos, crab rangoons, roast pork, beef with broccoli, and hot and sour soup are all reliably tasty. The owners are nice people who seem to care about your meal. The eat in experience is kind of tacky so I would recommend take out.

What can I say I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants and nothing compares to this one from the tea to the main courses it's phenomenal.

Authentic Chinese restaurant located in the most unlikely location. It was a great surprise to have better than vast majority of the Chinese restaurant in any China Town in VT! To start, the soup was so rich and tasty. THE BEST HOT & SOUR SOUP I HAVE EV HAD IN Y LIFE. Waiters, waitress, and the owner are great people. I really enjoyed it.

Positives: a very friendly and hard-working staff. The General Tso's was tangy and tasty. I also liked the lo mein. Though we ate the buffet, we saw a seafood bird's nest that came out of the kitchen that looked pretty impressive. Negatives: this is the middle of VT, so don't expect anything spectacular. I think the 5-star ratings are a bit inflated considering the clientele probably doesn't have much experience with authentic Asian cuisine. Very telling: most of the patrons were eating with forks. Bottom line: if I lived in the area, I would probably frequent it due to the scarcity of Asian food in the area. It was a reasonably pleasant experience, but would not compare to Chinese in most areas.

The Joy Wah is a great restaurant. A local family owns and operates the place and is very involved in the every day operations. One of my favorite things about Joy Wah is that the owner, Mr. Hom, remembers his customers by name. I grew up going to the Joy Wah with my family on a regular basis and the food and service has always been great. My only critique is that the filling in the crab rangoon seems to have lessened over the years...otherwise, the food is excellent. The view from the restaurant is great, since you can overlook the Connecticut River from certain places. Also, the brunch buffet on Sundays is excellent.

It's Podunk, Vermont. Actually, it's not even Podunk, Vermont, it's the outskirts of Podunk. And for the outskirts of Podunk, Vermont, this is pretty good Chinese food. The staff is polite and very accommodating. It's quiet and clean. I've never had to wait for a table. And the prices are entirely reasonable. I was born and raised in Chester, Vermont (a few miles away), so I frequented this place quite often, as it's among the best of what's available (this and Harry's in Ludlow which makes the best pad thai I've ever eaten) and affordable. Even if you take the limited options away, it's still a decent place to dine and they have an excellent brunch special on Sundays. What I find unsettling about it is the overall atmosphere. It's like the owners (who are in fact Chinese) looked around small town Vermont and realized that if Vermont were any whiter everyone would have snow blindness 24/7. So, the atmosphere is what you would create if you were trying to make fun of tacky, stereotypical Chinese restaurant - complete with the plaintive plucking of a zither as your theme music.

We stopped here for lunch on our way from NH, and didn't expect too much in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. We were extremely pleasantly surprised when Joy Wah served up some of the best chinese food we all have had in a long time. Great big dumplings, flavorful entrees and great service -- all with a great view of the river. We will return!!

While we lived in Bellows Falls the Joy Wah was part of our lives and when we moved away, Mr.Hom always remembered us when we passed by. A pearl in the middle of no where, they make the greatest shrimp in lobster sauce I've ever had and the general Tso is really delicious. A perfect stop while passing by or if you live in the area.

Joy Wah has been a real find. The lunch specials are a great deal, and yummy to boot. Real fried rice, not the steam cooker sit-around-for-hours kind. Perfectly done crab rangoons. The General Tso's chicken is not disgustingly sweet like most versions; it's balanced properly with vinegar, and served with broccoli to help cut the intensity of the sauce. The hamkey loves the free wonton strips and the pan-fried dumplings, though I find the latter a touch heavy and occasionally a little too greasy. Sundays they have a special brunch buffet, but it's almost an insult to call it a buffet given the sad state of Chinese buffets in general. The food is hot, fresh, and very good. The chicken and ginger was light and fresh, the bbq pork rivals the best I had from Sam Woo's back in California, and they avoid the emphasis on cheap fried crap that the everyday buffets have. No refills on soft drinks, though. It's obvious Joy Wah takes pride in their food, and the dinner and brunch prices can reflect that, but the quality and service matches up.

Yummy Chinese Food in VT. I'm from NYC, where there are so many Chinese restaurants... I was pleasantly surprised by the tastiness of the food here. If you're in the mood for Chinese food when you are in the area, give it a try.

We really wanted to like this place. The location is a 10, and the restaurant itself is spacious, clean and elegant for rural Vermont. Unfortunately the food was very mundane , extremely salty and underspiced. The waiter was curt and not particularly helpful. However both owners were quite friendly and stopped by to ask how things were - we didn't have the heart to tell them the truth.

My husband and I live not too far away from Joy Wah in Walpole, and happened to be passing by on our way home from visiting family in western VT and decided to stop in for dinner. The staff has always been pleasant, and for the area and price the food is pretty decent. But our recent visit was most likely our last. Our waitress was busy so it took a while to get our food, not her fault as they were understaffed, but even after the restaurant cleared out and we were one of 3 tables left it took us over 15 minutes to get our check. One of the other members of the wait staff had to come over and ask if we needed our check or food boxed to go, because our waitress was walking around the restaurant on her cellphone arguing with her boyfriend. The food wasn't terrible, but for someone that's a vegetarian and also doesn't eat anything fried or highly processed I was left to choose something off the health section. Which I didn't mind, but majority of the steamed vegetables were from a can, and the tofu wasn't fresh. I even wound up getting sick once we were home. Probably my own fault for assuming Joy Wah would be able to accommodate my diet, but it was still a disappointing dining experience. If you don't mind so-so American style Chinese with a nice view of the Connecticut River this is the place in the Bellows Falls area to go.

If you're from the NY/NJ metro area, don't expect the same kind of Chinese take-out you're use to. Not bad, not outstanding but, ok food. The restaurant itself is HUGE, and very clean.

Best meal after skiing! This place was the best finding after the awesome hotel we stayed at. Our meal there had many fresh vegetables, the spices were good for kids and grown ups, and the owner came to every table to ask if we were enjoying the food. The view is beautiful, so I suggest arriving before sun set.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
